HEALTH CARE

Make sure you’ve scheduled your horse’s annual veterinary exam. It’s time to get the annual vaccinations, wellness exam, fecal test and Coggins test and talk about any health concerns. Protect your horse(s) through prevention.

HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS

  • Clean and store your winter items, like blankets.
  • Check fences for damage like broken boards, loose posts or loose wires before you turn your horse out.
  • Minimize grazing as grass comes in. The fresh grass can lead to founder or colic so reduce the time of turnout for part of the day.
  • Groom the winter coat.

TRAIN BEFORE RIDING

Plan a conditioning program before just jumping back into it. Plan a 4-6 week work up from the slow winter riding months to ease them back into a more rigorous schedule. This will help reduce the risk of strain or injury to the tendon and ligaments which could slow you down for months.
